Explore Erfurt and its surroundings!
As the third largest city and the capital of Thuringia, Erfurt has much to offer. Due to the relatively minor destruction of the infrastructure during World War 2 and the loving conservation and restoration of the buildings over the decades, Erfurt is characterized by its well-preserved medieval city center.
In addition, due to its economic, intellectual, and political importance, Erfurt attracted contemporary personalities such as Martin Luther, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Wilhelm Humboldt, Johan Sebastian, and Tsar Alexander I over time.
With its rich history, the city invites everyone to delve into its past and explore its sights. These include the 120-meter Krämerbrücke, considered the longest-built bridge in Europe, the oldest synagogue in Central Europe preserved up to the roof, the Old Synagogue, Erfurt’s St. Mary’s Cathedral, and the Egapark Erfurt, one of the most important garden monuments of the 1960s in Germany.
In addition, the picturesque streets and alleys of Erfurt’s city center invite visitors to linger and enjoy numerous cafés, restaurants, and stores.
The region around Erfurt also offers numerous cultural opportunities as well as activities and sights. For example, the city of Weimar is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Northwest of Weimar is the Buchenwald Memorial, a former concentration camp. You can also visit numerous castles and palaces in Thuringia, such as Wartburg Castle or Friedenstein Gotha Castle.
For all nature and sports lovers, Thuringia is a magical place with its eight national parks. Here you will find numerous hiking trails, Nordic walking, and cycling routes. In the Hainich National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021, you can explore the ancient beech forest through a treetop trail.
You will also find numerous grottos to explore in this mountainous area.
